Recently, we delivered a highly sophisticated gantry crane to China. The 10-ton crane of type P500-Olympia® is used for pallet handling and charging of robots. In doing so, the areas where the robots are located shall either not be passed by the hoist at all or under certain conditions, only. Simple sensing of the position of the hoist using limit switches and contactor control would have been too complex due to the number of signals. This is why the VETTER experts decided in favour of a programmable logic controller (PLC).
Given the complexity, a positioning system of a known German manufacturer was used which is installed in the contact line of gantry and rail. The reading head carrier for crane and gantry travel indicates the current position of crane and hoist. The control system prevents crane and/or trolley from travelling according to the requirements. Thanks to an online visualisation, the customer is able to subsequently adjust the travel areas more precisely. Moreover, a router enables VETTER to provide remote support in case of failures without the need for a technician having to travel to China.
The control cabinet is fitted with an air conditioning system to ensure proper functioning of the sensitive electronics despite high air humidity and temperatures.
An interesting project with a pioneering technology!
